Chapter 25

Flea noticed they were surrounded at the same time as Blake, though he probably saw more than she did. He knew what to look for, after all. He knew the light-reflecting irises moving through the shadows weren’t from animals, even if they did belong to predators.

There wasn’t supposed to be anything by the church. That was why he and Blake were stationed there. Unknown vampires had been lingering within the territory for weeks, and it had the Court on edge. They’d set up patrol teams along their most traveled paths to hopefully catch them when they came out after nightfall. But they weren’t supposed to be there. He and Blake were just a link in the chain of guards keeping watch, looking for signs of long fangs in the night.

Now eight sets of those fangs were advancing on them. And given that their intention was apparently to kill members of the Chains without suffering casualties, focusing on him and Blake made plenty of sense. Two against eight made for wonderful odds. You didn’t need much luck to win that fight.

The thin vampire surged forward, aiming for Flea and holding the raw iron dagger high. Flea only just had the wherewithal to rotate as the vampire came near so Flea could send him sprawling into the snowbank in front of the church. Away from Blake.

He leaped down and straddled the vampire, hugging his chest and squeezing hard enough that it would have knocked the air out of him had he needed to breathe. Instead, it stunned the man just long enough for Flea to yank the raw iron dagger from his hand and toss it so it landed in the snow several feet away. Just touching the metal was like being burned and it left his arm feeling weak.

Those Night customers the Waywoman mentioned had clearly picked up their wares. Weapons specially made to hurt the Chains.

“Give me a clip!” he yelled at Blake. She threw him a magazine from her pocket without looking at him, wisely keeping her eyes on the vampires encroaching on their position.

“Stay back!” Blake shouted, firing her gun into the air. The noise was more pop than bang, reverberating against the snow and turning muffled in the winter night.

The vampires didn’t heed the warning, flashing their fangs in delighted grins. They outnumbered him and Blake four-to-one, and while he was strong and Blake decent with a gun, they were nothing compared to eight Night vampires.

They might not make it through this. But there was no way either of them was going quietly, and neither were the damn Night vampires.

Flea was thankful he’d spent enough time among fangers to recognize when one was new to immortality. Vampires were faster, stronger, and more murderous than almost all other supernatural creatures, but those powers were only made truly impressive with their age. Fledglings were nothing compared to their century-old kin. These eight weren’t the top brass. And Flea was more than a match for someone with baby fangs.

Flea punched the vampire beneath him in the jaw hard enough that it cracked his teeth.
